Title: A brief introduction

Thierry Smith is no stranger to us: he went on several expeditions, looking for mammal fossils (see "Excavations in Wyoming" and Rumania). After five visits to the Gobi Desert as part of the "Sino-Belgian Dinosaur Expeditions", he became convinced that the Erenhot area contained many fossils. During this sixth journey, he can indulge in his specialty: the evolution and geographic origins of the modern mammals.

Pieter Missiaen shares Thierry's enthusiasm about fossil mammals. He studies the origin of modern mammal groups in Asia. The expedition to Subeng is extremely important to him, since it can yield loads of new information about Asian fossil mammals, the precise subject of his research.

Annelise Folie is researching fossil lizards and amphibians. Not much is known about the systematics and evolution of these animals in the time of the last dinosaurs and the first modern mammals, which means that she will have a lot of work to do.
