Fundación Huinay
The Fundación Huinay is situated between the Comao and Leptepu Fjords and stretches as far as the Argentinian border, covering 34,000 hectares (84,000 acres). This private institution, owned by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and de Chilean electricity company ENDESA, launched its field station at the end of 2002. The station can only be reached by sea from Hornopiren, the nearest village situated about 60 km (37 miles) north. Only six fishing families live nearby.

An international collaboration
The project was organized by Dr. Ruth Desqueyroux-Faundez of the Natural History Museum of Geneva, and financed by the Georges and Antoine Claraz Foundation.
