The enormous economic and industrial growth over the past two centuries brought more and more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Especially carbon dioxide or carbonic acid gas (CO2)is a threat, since it is contributing more than probably to global warming. The Kyoto Protocol of 1998 has been designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a minimum. This is thwarted by ever increasing fuel consumption, even in Belgium.

Nowadays scientists are not only seeking ways to reduce the carbon oxide emission, but they are also thinking seriously about the storage of CO2 before it gets into the atmosphere.
