Education

  • Ph.D.: 1981, Vrije Universiteit Brussel: The Holocene Development of the Western Coastal plain of Belgium.
  • M.Sc.: 1977, Quaternary Geology, IFAQ, Vrije Universiteit Brussel
  • B.Sc.: 1972, Physical Geography, Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Career

  • 1.7.1972 - 30.9.1985 : Quaternary geologist at the Belgian Geological Survey
  • 1.10.1985 - 31.8.1986 : Geologist at the Department of Natural Resources
  • 1.9.1986 – 31.12.2001 : Quaternary geologist at the Belgian Geological Survey
  • 1.1.2002 - : Senior Geologist at the Belgian Geological Survey

Research Fields

  • Quaternary Geology of the Belgian Coastal Plain: mapping, subsoil geology, geochronology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, palaeogeographical reconstructions, engineering geology, geo-archaeology.
  • Sea-level changes in the last 10,000 years
  • Quaternary geology of estuaries and deltas (subsoil geology, geological mapping, subsidence)
  • Quaternary geology of the Belgian continental shelf
  • Sedimentology of tidal deposits
  • Geo-archaeology in fluvial and coastal plains

Reaserch Projects

  • The contrasting Holocene sediment succession along the western and eastern part of the Belgian coast: causes and consequences.
Over 50 borings along the Belgian coastline have been described and interpreted. They show a contrasting sediment succession between the western and eastern part. The absence of the typical coastal barrier deposits in the east indicates sever coastal erosion and a significant landward shift of the coastline in this part. Shoreface and beach deposits are occurring on land. The 14C dates of the open marine shells in the shoreface deposits indicate that the coastal change must have happened around 2000 cal BP.
  • MOCHA, Mud Origin, Characterisation and Human Activities.
Origin and process of deposition of the late-Holocene clay in the coastal area and the relation between sea mud and the changes in coastal configuration during the past 2000 years.
  • High-resolution dating of late Holocene tidal-channel deposits in the Belgian coastal plain using optical dating techniques.
The dating of the sand of the tidal channels which developed when the tidal system re-entered the coastal plain after a period of 2 to 3 ka years of peat growth will confine the period of profound coastal change. In collaboration with Dr. Barbara Mauz, Liverpool University (UK), Synthesys Project.
  • Reconstruction of the coastal landscape in the period of Roman occupation.
Geological investigation for the support of archaeological surveys revealed the impact of human activities on the evolution of the coastal plain.
  • The geological evolution of the Belgian continental shelf during the Quaternary.
The compilation of new and existing borehole data and seismic lines reveals the Quaternary stratigraphy and depositional history of the continental shelf together with the processes that shaped the configuration of the Southern North Sea and its coastlines (PhD M. Mathys, in progress).
  • IUAP Project: Greater Mesopotamia: reconstruction of its history and environemnt (www.naturalsciences.be/geology - Scientific research, Geoarchaeology and Sedimentology)
Holocene palaeogeographies of the Lower Khuzestan plain (SW Iran, Persian Gulf) and the Tigris-Euphrates floodplain (Lower Mesopotamia, Iraq) and their geoarchaeological implications.

Study of the interaction of rivers, sea-level changes and human activities on the plain of the Persian Gulf during the Holocene.

Scientific Dinstinction
