Cartography | Subcrop map - Brabant Massif
Introduction
The Brabant Massif is the basement of Flanders. It contains the oldest deposits known in Belgium, which are rocks that were deposited as sediments 550 million years old. A cover of young deposits, usually over 100 m thick, hides the largest part of the Brabant Massif. Only its southern part, close to the border of Flanders, is exposed in a few outcrops.
The well-hidden Brabant Massif forms a great challenge for many researchers. Information on its nature and genesis is gathered from deep drillings and geophysical methods. The few outcrop zones are studied in detail, and our extensive archives are carefully screened in search of historical observations.
The Flemish Region has ordered a new geological map of the Brabant Massif, to replace the now ten-year-old map. Five geologists from our survey are involved in this project.
