BIOTRAC s.p.r.l.
Reaching Antwerp is easy. The main point for orientation is Antwerpen-Centraal railway station in
the city centre. All trains and busses from the airports converge there and at Rooseveltplaats. So if
you get lost... ask for Antwerpen-Centraal!!
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CONGRESS ORGANISATION WILL NEITHER PROVIDE
TRANSPORTATION, NOR WILL PICK UP PEOPLE AT AIRPORTS OR RAILWAY
STATIONS. WE COUNT ON YOUR SCOUTING TALENTS AND THIS BROCHURE
SHOULD HELP YOU WITH THIS.....
(1) Reaching Antwerp by airplane:
Airports with good connections to Antwerp:
Antwerp airport: http://www.antwerpairport.be/en/index.html
Brussels airport: http://www.brusselsairport.be/en/
Charleroi airport: http://www.charleroi-airport.com/BSCA/siteEN.nsf/.Accueil?Readform
Amsterdam airport (Schiphol): http://www.schiphol.nl/
Antwerp airport is a very small (and cosy) one and is served by only very few companies. Yet,
people coming from (or via) the UK might find it a convenient solution as there are daily flights to
Antwerp from London, Liverpool and Manchester. In Antwerp airport you can take a bus (line 14)
to Antwerpen-Centraal railway station, i.e. where the congress hotels are located. Delegates with
campus accommodation should take the same bus (line 14) to either Antwerpen-Centraal railway
station, where (or in Quellinstraat; see map 1) they have to change to busses 32, 27, 21, 501, 502 or
503 to reach the campus (see further «How to reach the campus») or to Antwerpen-Berchem
railway station, where they have to switch to busses 32, 21, 501, 502 or 503 (see Reaching
Antwerp by train).
Brussels (Zaventem) is the main international airport in Belgium, with a coach (Antwerp Airport
Express) that will bring you to the city centre of Antwerp at De Keyserlei, in front of Antwerpen-
Centraal railway station (map 1) (1 bus/hour; trip takes 45min; 8 ; tickets are purchased from the
bus driver). The coach departs at level 0 in the airport.
The schedule of the coach is:
Brussels Airport --> Antwerp: 07:00 08:00 09:00 ... 23:00 i.e. exactly on the hour
Antwerp --> Brussels Airport: 05:30 07:00 08:00 ... 22:00 i.e. exactly on the hour
You can also take the train in Brussels Airport (airport railway station at level -1) to Brussel-Noord
railway station and switch trains in Brussel-Noord to Antwerpen (Centraal and Berchem; 4-5
trains/hour; 60-80min; 6.80 ). Trains to Antwerpen depart in Brussel-Noord from platform 11.
In some cases you may have to switch trains in Antwerpen-Berchem to proceed to Antwerpen-
Centraal. This is announced in the train and on the screens in Antwerpen-Berchem
Charleroi (Brussels South) is a major hub for a number of low cost airlines. From Charleroi you
can reach Antwerpen-Centraal by direct train (2 trains/hour; 90-100min; 12.40 ) (see further at the
website of the Belgian railways here below).
Another convenient possibility is to fly to Amsterdam (Schiphol) and take the train from Schiphol
Airport to Antwerp. You can take either the fast trains (Thalys; you have to book in advance and it
is more expensive) or the normal direct trains (one train/hour; 120min; 26 ) (see further at the
website of the Belgian railways here below).
(2) Reaching Antwerp by train:
Antwerp is well-served by railways, with international connections to Amsterdam (each hour),
Paris, London and many other major cities in Europe. Antwerpen-Centraal is the main railway
station and has been drastically renovated...
Athough Antwerpen-Centraal is the most convenient station to arrive, delegates residing at the
campus and arriving by train from (or via) Brussels, may prefer to arrive in Antwerpen-Berchem
railway station.
When arriving in Antwerpen-Berchem, walk down the stairs from the platform to arrive in the
station corridor under the rails and platforms. On your right hand side you will see the station hall
where you can buy bus tickets in the travel center. Either you then go to the square in front of the
station with at its end the bus stops of lines 21 32 501 502 503 to the campus sites and to the
city centre (Antwerpen-Centraal and Rooseveltplaats) or you return to the station corridor and go to
the exit a the other end, where you leave the station to your right side to go to the bus stops under
the railway bridge. This bus stop is more convenient, particularly when it rains.
Time tables, itineraries and other railway travel information can be found at the website of the
Belgian railways, where you can also purchase your tickets online (by credit and bank cards).
PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU HAVE NO TICKET WHEN YOU TAKE A TRAIN, YOU
SHOULD WARN THE TRAIN STAFF BEFORE YOU ENTER THE TRAIN, otherwise you may
be fined. Note also that purchasing tickets on the train itself is more expensive than purchasing
tickets online or in the railway stations. The prices indicated here or on the website of the Belgian
railways are for tickets bought online or in the railway stations.

(3) Reaching Antwerp by bus:
There are convenient and cheap bus connections between many major European cities and Antwerp
via 'Eurolines' (see website below). The Eurolines bus terminus in Antwerp is in the city centre near
the Rooseveltplaats, close to Antwerpen-Centraal and the congress hotels (map 1).
International bus connections to Antwerp ('Eurolines'): http://www.eurolines.com/
(4) Reaching Antwerp by car:
Please help Belgium to fullfil its Kyoto norm.... and do not come by car. However, if you still prefer
to come by car, then these are the places to reach (all in Antwerpen):
Congress site: University of Antwerp, Campus Groenenborger, Groenenborgerlaan 171
Campus accommodation MHC: University of Antwerp, Campus Middelheim, Middelheimlaan 1
Campus accommodation TPC ('Theologisch Pastoraal Centrum'): Groenenborgerlaan 149
A route planner: http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm
A personalised route description will be provided by the Congress Organiser if asked for.

(5) How to reach the Congress site:
Delegates with Campus accommodation can simply walk to the congress venue (maps 2-3).
For delegates using hotel accommodation there will be a special CONGRESS BUS in the
morning. The exact departure time and location of this congress bus is not yet fixed, but it will
probably depart between 08:20 and 08:30 from ROOSEVELTPLAATS.
Alternativey you can use the public transport : see bus/tram 'hit' list under 'Public transport' and
maps1-3 in this brochure.

time tables of the different busses and trams (see public transport); on fridays there are also two
night busses (see public transport); sharing a taxi by three or more persons (depending on taxi type)
is affordable as well).

PUBLIC TRANSPORT: DE LIJN
Bus/tram tickets or multiticket cards (the so-called 'Lijnkaart') can be purchased at the ticketing
desks in the railway stations, from ticketing machines in the pre-metro stations, in the Lijnwinkel at
Rooseveltplaats (Opera side) and in many supermarkets and bookshops. Tickets can also be
purchased on the bus/tram, but are more expensive then. Current fares for single tickets are:
Purchased as individual ticket:
1.5 on bus/tram
1. 2 elsewhere
Purchased on a Lijnkaart:
1.0 on bus/tram
0.8 els
ewhere
A Lijnkaart for the Antwerp city area costs 8 (= 10 tickets). A ticket is valid over the whole
bus/tram/pre-metro network in Antwerp during ONE hour; in that time you can change from busses
and trams as much as you want. Each time you enter the bus or tram you have to push the ticket or
Lijnkaart in the yellow validation machines. The machine will whistle when your ticket is no longer
valid (i.e. when your out of time).
Here below we provide a summary of relevant bus/tram lines and approximate departure times:
departure times indicated in blue should be OK for arriving in time at the congress; departure times
in red indicate last departures. You can check the exact time schedules at each bus stop; most
bus/tram stops are indicated in maps 1-3 :

BUS/TRAM ITINERARY LANDMARKS AND DESCRIPTIONS:
All lines going from TOWN to CAMPUS (except bus 27) ultimately cross the motorway
around Antwerp ('Antwerpse Ring') via the same bridge (yet bus 21 crosses the motorway 3
times, it is the 3rd crossing that counts here). The motorway is a good landmark that should
prepare you for watching out and eventually giving a stop signal ('ring the bell'):
15, 190, 192, 195, 196, 197, 297: ring bell while crossing the bridge over the motorway, the
tram/bus will then stop at 'Grote Steenweg' stop 'Koninklijke Laan' from where you simply walk via
the Koninklijke Laan to MHC. The next stop at Grote Steenweg is 'Jan Moorkensstraat'. Go to
Troyentenhoflaan (facing 'Super GB' and with pub 'Pulhof' and 'ING' bank on its corners). Turn into
the Troyentenhoflaan and follow it to its other end (ahead you will see the Middelheim Hospital; cf.
earlier photographs). There you arrive at a crossing point where on the other side you will see the
bus stop 'Middelheim' of bus 32 with on its left the emergency entrance (with green sign 'ZNA
SPOED') of Middelheim Hospital. Proceed further as described for 32(*)
32, 21, 501-503: after crossing the bridge over the motorway, busses will turn to the right (avenue
with trees and biking track in the middle) to a crossing point with traffic lights and a memorial
statue '1914-1918' in the middle (look left; see map 3). There the busses will turn again to the
right into the Koninklijke Laan (avenue bordered by double row of trees at both sides), where you
will soon see the cemetary on your left side. As soon as you see this, ring the bell if you want to
be at MHC: bus 32 will then turn to the left into Floraliënlaan and drop you off right in front of
MHC, while 21 and 501-503 will continue straight on and drop you off in front of the main
campus building (see photographs of MHC) at Middelheimlaan.
If you do not want to be at MHC, but want to reach the congress site and TPC, then do not ring
the bell when you see the cemetary on your left side, but simply proceed as described under 32(*)
and 21, 501-503(*) (depending on which bus you are):
32(*): After turning to the left into Floraliënlaan and passing the first stop in front of MHC, keep an
eye to the right side where you will see a parking building with the Middelheim Hospital in the
background (see earlier photographs). Ring the bell and the bus will drop you at bus stop
'Middelheim'. Walk a bit further and turn (on the right) into the emergency entrance (note the green
sign 'ZNA SPOED' above the entrance) to Middelheim Hospital. Follow this road to the other side
of the hospital (you will go through a short ('corridor'). After this corridor, at the other side, you will
reach the walking/biking track and bus road connecting MHC with the congress site + TPC. Follow
this track to your left (notice the reddish bricks) towards the trees and continue to follow the red
bricks. You will automatically arrive at the congress site (see earlier pictures).
21, 501-503(*): After passing the main campus building, busses will turn to the left into a road
leading to Middelheim Hospital (on the right side you may see some modern art in open air). The
busses will then serve the main public entrance of Middelheim Hospital (see earlier photographs)
and continue along the bus road 'parallel' to the reddish walking/biking track connecting MHC with
the congress site + TPC. You will see the congress buildings on your right side. Once you do, ring
the bell and the busses will drop you off AFTER the round point at Groenenborgerlaan. From there
you can simply walk to the congress site and TPC.
The itinerary of bus 27 is more complex and follows a very different parcours. After a trip of
approx. 30-35 min you will arrive at TPC on the corner of the crossing between Beukenlaan
and Groenenborgerlaan (there are traffic lights; keep an eye to your left and compare with the
photographs of the TPC buildings above). Ring the bell if you want to be at TPC. The bus will then
turn to the right and drop you off at a little square from where you can walk to TPC and the
congress site. If you want to be closer to the congress site or go to MHC then stay on the bus.
After the little square the bus will turn to the left towards Sint Augustinus Hospital (on your right
side), where it will turn to the left. Once done so, ring the bell to be dropped off at the stop for
the congress site (round point at Groenenborgerlaan). If you want to go further to MHC, stay on
the bus. It will turn now around the round point to the right and follow the Groenenborgerlaan to the
next traffic lights at Prins Boudewijnlaan (on the right side you will pass a modern church). At the
traffic lights the bus will turn to the left and follow the main road (with trees and biking track in the
middle + parked cars). After a few hundreds m the bus will diagonally cross the trees and biking
track while on the left side you will see the building of Middelheim Hospital. Once crossed the
Prins Boudewijnlaan, you will see on your right the cemetary along Floraliënlaan (wall with
orange-brown bricks). When you have passed the parking building of Middelheim Hospital
on your left, ring the bell for stopping at MHC. Both next bus stops are OK for this. If you
nevertheless still stay on the bus, you will end up at Middelheim Hospital (terminus of bus 27).
