Approach
- Sequence mitochondrial DNA fragments of endemic fish and crustaceans of lakes Baikal and Tanganyika, sampled from habitats with different characteristics.
- We will study genetic responses to climate-induced lake level changes below and inter-species divergence and analyse the evolutionary consequences of lake level changes across species and populations occurring in different parts of both lakes.
- Using a molecular clock, we will correlate the effects of climate induced lake level changes with the timing of adaptive radiations and speciation events.
- DNA sequence data and output of ecological modelling studies will be used to evaluate the impact of future global climate change on these faunas.
