The second expedition (a total of sampling 21 sampling stations in the southern lake basin only), was organized by the partners from the University of Graz (Austria), and was executed in collaboration with the partners from Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland), the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Belgium), and associated partners from the Zambian Ministry of Fisheries. The participants sampled ostracods, shrimps and cichlids from gently sloping and steep shorelines for phylogenetic, phylogeographic and population genetic analysis.

Ostracods were collected with plankton nets on sandy and muddy beaches and by diving and from sediment samples taken with a dredge.

Shrimps were collected with plankton nets on sandy and muddy beaches, from under stones and in vegetation, and shell dwelling species by diving to collect gastropod shells (diving), night catches with plankton nets and traps with dead fishes as bait.

Cichlids were collected with gills nets of various mesh sizes, and shell dwelling species by diving to collect gastropod shells (diving).

Participants

Christian Sturmbauer & Stephan Koblmuller (Graz, Austria), Kenneth Irvine & John O’Brien (Dublin, Ireland), Koen Martens, Bruno Nevado & Erik Verheyen (Brussels, Belgium)
