Did early whales function the same way as marine reptiles?

Research from ULiège and RBINS investigated the morphological similarities between the earliest whales and ancient marine reptiles from the dinosaur-era, the mosasaurs. Four specimens from our collections were used for this study.

Digging Jurassic Dinosaurs in Wyoming: 'Camarasaurus' Morris

The third excavation season in central Wyoming is spendid one for the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences: three dinosaurs from the late Jurassic era. A - at first sight - young Camarasaurus, a Dryosaurus and possibly a Brachiosaurus.

Ten new species of predatory fish from Lake Edward

A team of Belgian researchers has described ten new species of small predatory fish from Lake Edward. Scientists have long suspected that this lake between the DR Congo and Uganda is home to exceptional fish diversity.

Pterosaurs already had coloured feathers

Pterosaurs, flying reptiles and close relatives of the dinosaurs, already developed feathers of different shapes and colours. This has been proven by a 115 million year old Brazilian fossil, studied by a team of palaeontologists.

Mammals put brawn before brains to survive post-dinosaur world
