Vote for the name of our new research vessel!

On 6 November 2018, the cabinet Science Policy launched a competition for secondary schools to propose a name for the new Belgian oceanographic research vessel, which we expect at the end of 2020. Several schools have shown their most original side. Both in terms of names and supporting videos! A panel of experts selected the most appropriate names from all entries. Until 27 March 2019 it is your turn to vote for the name that best suits our new research ship.

After almost 35 years of service, the Belgian oceanographic research vessel RV Belgica (built in 1984) needs to be replaced. That is why the Federal Government decided on 28 October 2016 to build a new modern research vessel. It will be operational by the end of 2020, and will be able to further support the marine research community for the next 30 years. Follow the construction process on the website of the project 'NewRV' ('RV' stands for Research Vessel).

A new ship obviously requires a name. To this end, the cabinet Science Policy launched a competition procedure on 6 November 2018. Until 31 January 2019, Belgian classes from the first to the fourth year of secondary school could submit proposals. Valid proposals had to consist of an appropriate name and an original video in which the name choice is explained enthusiastically. 19 classes submitted a valid proposal, and after a first selection by the project partners we have now arrived at the second phase: six proposed names are still competing for the first prize, and from 27 February to 27 March 2019 everyone can decide under which name the new ship will sail our seas and oceans. The winning class will rightly be allowed to call itself ambassador of the new research vessel, and will test their sea legs on a daytrip with the current research vessel RV Belgica.

A selection jury also decides which film can convince the most in terms of originality. The class that made this production can also join a day trip on RV Belgica. So there are two winners who will be able to enjoy this great and unique experience! All videos will soon be available on the Facebook page.

The project 'NewRV' was initiated through a collaboration between the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), the Ministry of Defence and the Federal Science Policy (BELSPO).
