Grey Seals Predate on Harbour Porpoises

In the Netherlands, research of stranded porpoises showed that almost 20% of them had been killed by grey seals.

The predation of a sea mammal by another sea mammal was first described by an RBINS scientist in cooperation with the University of Liège in 2012. Many people reacted sceptically, but now the theory has been widely accepted. After the description of predation cases in the Netherlands, articles have appeared in Science Magazine (interview with our scientist Jan Haelters) and in New Scientist.
