Key Projects

2007-2012: Project Manager at the GSB of the GECO project (“Geology for an ECOnomic sustainable development”) financed by the Belgium Foreign Affairs Ministry. This project is oriented towards the sustainable management of natural mineral resources, especially those located in Central Africa. The Royal Museum for Central Africa and the Geological Survey of Belgium are co-partner in GECO.

The spectrum of activities covers:​

  • the physico-chemical characterization of ore deposits, such as those of Copper and Cobalt in the Katanga Province (Democratic Republic of Congo): (collaborators: Christian Burlet, Herman Goethals, Tom Thys);
  • the inventory and characterization of geomaterials in Katanga (collaborator: Christian Burlet);
  • the environmental direct and indirect impact of the mining sector (collaborator: Laëtitia Dupin, François Muhashy)

2008-2009: TRACE project (“TRACeability of hEterogenite”) financed by the Belgian Science Policy. Evaluation of the physical-chemical tools for the traceability of heterogenite (oxidized Cobalt ore). 2011: Researcher for the project “Obstacles of the deep geothermal energy in the Walloon Region” financed by the Walloon Region. The main partner of the project was the ECOREM Ltd and the subcontractors were GSB and VITO.

2010-2011: Development of the “Geothermal Platform of Wallonia” (deep geothermal energy) financed by the Walloon Region. The GSB is the project coordinator. Subcontractors: University of Liège (Hans Havenith, Prof) and VS. GEOFORMA (Vinciane Stenmans, Independant Geologist).

GECO: Geology for an ECOnomic sustainable development

The Belgian Federal Government entrusted the Royal Museum for Central Africa and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences to develop a ‘centre of excellence’ oriented towards a sustainable management of natural resources, especially those from Democratic Republic of Congo.

Geothermal platform of Wallonia

With the awareness of these last years on climate warming and scarcity of fossil energy sources, renewable energy sources undergo a fast growing development. The geothermal energy has the advantage to be a clean in terms of gas emissions and inexhaustible resource.

TRACE: TRACeability of hEterogenite

The TRACE project aims to develop tools oriented towards the analytical traceability of heterogenite, a secondary cobalt ore in Democratic Republic of Congo. The project is conducted in common with the research centre GECO and the TASK FORCE MIRECA.
