Geological Model of Belgium (GMB)

In the scope of this axis, the GSB acts as a key provider in Belgium of geo-interpretation services with added-values or innovative data retrieval. Additional duty of GMB will aim to provide ‘Inspire-compliant’ geoscientific information for Belgium, in cooperation with or at the request of the competent authorities. Besides the new processing based on existing data, GMB will also benefit from priorities of campaigns oriented towards the acquisition of new data, applying both traditional approach of direct description (e.g. boreholes, field geological mapping, structural syntheses) and recent methods (e.g. PSInSAR).

Priority research projects will focus on:

  • Analyzing soil movements by radar interferometry technique PSInSAR;
  • Estimating the stability of the monuments using radar interferometry.

Research projects

29/04/2015 to 28/10/2017

H3O – The Campine

The general scope of this project is to solve existing connection problems between the Flemish and Dutch geological and hydrogeological layer cake models in the Campine Region by producing cross-border, up-to-date, three-dimensional geological and hydrogeological models of the Cenozoic deposits, based on existing (hydro-) geological data.
01/09/2014 to 31/08/2018

GEPATAR: GEotechnical and Patrimonial Archives Toolbox for ARchitectural conservation in Belgium

The GEPATAR project started in September 2014 for a duration of four years and is funded by the BRAIN-be research programme of BELSPO. Aim of the project is to improve the management of built heritage in Belgium by integrating data from the archives of RBINS and RICH and by assessing the stability of monuments using radar interferometry.
OneGeology-Europe
11/09/2008 to 11/09/2010

OneGeology-Europe

The OneGeology-Europe program consists in uniting geological data and maps all over Europe at the 1:1,000,000 and make it web accessible. Through a multilingual webportal the European geological surveys will provide an interactive geological map of Europe.
01/01/2004 to 31/12/2006

Terrafirma

Ground movements revealed by radar interferometry.
Brabant Massif subcrop map
01/01/2004 to 31/12/2006

Subcrop map: Brabant Massif

The Brabant Massif is the basement of Flanders. It contains the oldest deposits known in Belgium, which are rocks that were deposited as sediments 550 million years old. A cover of young deposits, hides the largest part of the Brabant Massif. Only its southern part, close to the border of Flanders, is exposed in a few outcrops.
16/10/2002 to 16/10/2004

Tertiary isohypse-maps

By using the available geological datas (drillings, exposures, seismic profiles, geophysical logs...) isohypse-maps will be created at the base of each tertiary formations in Flanders and Walloon-Brabant. Using all exposures and drillings datas, extracted from the archives of the GSB (Geological Survey of Belgium), DOV (underground databank of...
01/01/2002 to 12/12/2004

GEOINFO

All the descriptive (and interpretative) data (texts, diagram, section, geophysical logs) of the Walloon Region are gradually computerised and assembled in databases.
01/01/2002 to 01/02/2004

DB-ARCO: Databank of slate and coticule

Digital cartography of underground workings of slate and coticule
01/01/1998 to 31/12/2018

Geological map of Wallonia

The update of the geological maps in Wallonia permits to collect new data and the treatment of the previous collected data since the first mapping campaign. This new geological cartography campaign is essentially based on new fieldwork.
