Key Projects
  • As a fellow researcher he was first engaged in the EU-funded project GESTCO in which he evaluated the storage potential of coal mines for CO2. This research identified additional opportunities, such as ‘CO2-geothermics’.
  • After working on applied topics, such as the digitalization of coal mines and geothermal evaluations, he was appointed as scientific leader of the team responsible for remapping the lower Palaeozoic in Flanders (Brabant Massif, Belgium). This area of 200 by 80 kilometre is largely subcrop, requiring geophysical on top of traditional stratigraphic and structural mapping techniques.
  • Next to these projects, activities in the GeoEnergy group of the Geological Survey of Belgium were maintained. In 2005 Kris Piessens brought together the Belgian expertise on CCS in a 5-partner team, and obtained national funding for the project Policy Support System for Carbon Capture and Storage. This was quickly recognized as the reference project on CCS in Belgium, and resulted in a rapid expansion of national and international networking contacts (federal advisor on CCS, EFG panel leader on CCS, involvement in ZEP, chair of expert group of EuroGeoSurveys…). This line of work is emphasized by the organization of public symposia and a press event, and was continued in the PSS-CCS BeNe and PSS-CCS II projects. Next to being coordinator, he also played a central role in the project and the development of the PSS simulator, which is an ad-hoc economic-environmental tool that provides in-depth insights in national and international CCS implementation. He feels well at ease wandering of from the beaten tracks of geosciences towards topics such as sink uncertainty, pipeline transport systems, real options economic analysis, raster routing, and Monte-Carlo analysis.
  • The CGS Europe project (2010-2013, www.cgseurope.net) is a pan-European network project aimed at the exchange and improvement of knowledge on CO2 Geological Storage. Kris Piessens was responsible for the European contacts and the basic architecture of a scientific knowledge platform on relevant literature. The contacts established during this project continue to be valorised through ad-hoc cooperation with Germany, Austria and Sweden.
  • The project EuroGeoSource (2010-2013, www.eurogeosource.eu), for which Kris Piessens is the RBINS-GSB contact, focussed on policy support through the development of a web portal with data on energetic and non-energetic mineral resources. The GSB was leader of the work-package that describes the expectations and needs of the potential users of this portal. The final event of this project was organised at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.
  • The ACCESS project (Assistance in Clean Coal and Environmentally sound Storage Solutions, 2011-2012, www.access-kazakhstan.eu) focussed on knowledge exchange between the EU and Kazakhstan. The GSB-RBINS was responsible for all actions relating to CCS, including the mapping of the CCS potential in Kazakhstan, determining under which economic scenarios CCS can be a relevant option in a developing country.
  • A project on the geogenic release was started in 2012, and continues to monitor on a monthly basis the geochemistry and flow characteristics of the sources around Pouhon Delcor (Spa, Belgium) in order to quantify the natural release of CO2 in this area.

ALPI: Assessment of Low Carbon Society Policy Instruments

Finance is a critical issue for the development of a low-carbon society especially during times of economic recession. The ALPI project promotes relevant instruments to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon society by demonstrating the performance and impact of policy instruments on economic, government budget and environmental aspects.
