Geo-energy Group

This axis will cover the applied research related to those aspects of geo-energy that are not yet scientifically or technically mature. It is directed towards novel technological solutions until commercialization (when other players move in / are imposed).

Different aspects of research include:

  • CO2 geological storage;
  • Shale gas;
  • Geothermal energy;
  • Energy policy & strategy.

GeoCamb
01/03/2020 to 29/02/2024

GeoCamb

While the EU is on track to meet its goal of 20% renewable energy production in 2020, Belgium’s target number, i.e. 13%, is projected not to be reached (European Commission, 2019).

DESIGNATE - Decision Support under Uncertainty for Geothermal Applications

Geothermal energy as a renewable, continuously available source of energy can help reducing our climate impact and increasing energy security. Shallow, closed-loop systems provide a source for heating in combination with heat pumps.

15/12/2014 to 15/03/2017

ALPI: Assessment of Low Carbon Society Policy Instruments

Finance is a critical issue for the development of a low-carbon society especially during times of economic recession. The ALPI project promotes relevant instruments to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon society by demonstrating the performance and impact of policy instruments on economic, government budget and environmental aspects.
01/01/2014 to 31/12/2015

BeTemper

The project aims to assess the shallow geothermal potential in Belgium through analysis of thermal properties of rocks from the surface to a depth of 150 m, which covers the standard depth for a vertical loop system currently installed in Belgium.

Geothermal platform of Wallonia

With the awareness of these last years on climate warming and scarcity of fossil energy sources, renewable energy sources undergo a fast growing development. The geothermal energy has the advantage to be a clean in terms of gas emissions and inexhaustible resource.

ThermoMap
01/09/2010 to 31/08/2013

ThermoMap

The goal of the project is to map the potential of very shallow geothermal energy in Europe. Therefore, ThermoMap aims at fostering the subsoil information in order to develop shallow geothermal systems across Europe.

01/01/2009 to 31/12/2012

PSS-CCS: Policy Support System for Carbon Capture and Storage

While Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) seems to be a viable option from a technical, geological and economic point of view, the critical question that remains is how and at which cost CCS can be implemented at a large scale in the near future.

GETSCO
01/02/2000 to 01/02/2004

GESTCO: Geological Storage of CO2

European potential for the geological storage of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion.
