Geoarchaeology and Quaternary Geology

This axis investigates the physical environment during the Pleistocene and the Holocene, its evolution and its interaction with the humans:

  • Reconstructing the changing environments of coastal and fluvial plains during Pleistocene and Holocene times through elaborating sea-level histories, assessing causes and locations of erosion and deposition, sources of sediment supply and clay geology. Investigating the mechanisms of coastal processes and human impact on the late Quaternary geological record in low-lying plains through the study of the role of geological inheritance on coastal erosion, assessing the impact of human activity on coastal development, and assessment of neotectonic movements and natural hazards.
  • Reconstructing the climatic changes and their impacts on the human environment during the Pleistocene.

Seasonality and mobility of the last Neanderthals/first Anatomically Modern Humans in North-West Europe: a faunal perspective

PhD project by Elodie-Laure Jimenez at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, on the different aspects of human and faunal occupation in North-West Europe at the end of MIS 3, by studying migrations and seasonality.

Greater Mesopotamia: Reconstruction of its Environment and History

Our aim is to contribute to a comprehensive study of depositional sedimentary environments, their evolution and the human interaction within the region. Regarding the latter topic it is our aim to detect how settlement patterns changed in relation to changing sea-level, shoreline displacements and to changing watercourses.

BiSpEem

This project aims the reconstruction of climatic and environmental variability during the Eemian period, based on an intercomparison of marine carbonate bivalves from coastal sedimentary cores and independently dated calcite speleothems.

IUAP Project: The Land of Sumer and Akkad

The main objective of this IUAP- project is to investigate the interaction between the palaeoenvironments and the development of the social, political, and economic institutions of the populations in Mesopotamia in the middle and late Holocene.
