Research projects

21/10/2013 to 20/10/2017

EC COST Enram

Animal movement, and especially animal migration, is of great scientific and practical importance, and wide public appeal.

16/10/2013 to 15/10/2016

EMODNet-Geology 2

The EMODnet-Geology project is one of seven that bring together information on the Geology, Chemistry, Biology,

01/10/2013 to 31/12/2017

Transnational and Integrated Long-term Marine Exploitation Strategies

TILES is devoted to the creation of a harmonised geological knowledgebase of the Belgian and southern Dutch part of the North Sea. Most innovatively, the geological resource will be quantified in 5 dimensions: space, depth, time, and associated uncertainties.

01/10/2013 to 31/12/2017

4DEMON: 4 decades of Belgian marine monitoring

The 4DEMON project was designed to build quality-checked, intercalibrated and integrated data sets on the marine environment in the Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS), and use this data for assessing environmental change in this area.

01/10/2013 to 31/10/2016

A network for marine optics measurements in turbid waters

A network for marine optics measurements in turbid waters.

Data gathered from different regions (North Sea, Gironde, La Plata, Mediterranean) are used to test models to retrieve turbidity from reflectance.

01/10/2013 to 30/09/2016

Ant trophic functions in mountain rainforests revealed by biochemical analyses

In lowland tropical forests, ants play a variety of trophic functions in green food webs but their abundance and diversity decrease with elevation. How these functions are altered by elevation and how ants are replaced by other key arthropod taxa remain poorly studied due to the difficulty to determine ant diet by direct observations.

01/10/2013 to 31/12/2015

JELLYMOD – Modelling jellyfish in the North Sea

Whether jellyfish occurrence is increasing worldwide is still under debate. In the Belgian continental shelf, the occurrence of jellyfish swarms may be problematic for at least two reasons: tourism and marine ecology. In the summer 2013, many people have suffered from jellyfish’s stinger during recreation at the seaside in Belgium.

01/03/2013 to 28/02/2017

EUROFLEETS 2: New operational steps towards an alliance of European research fleets

EUROFLEETS2 will enhance integration through specific actions aimed at consolidating the organization, methodology and tools initiated during EUROFLEETS1 and through operational initiatives towards more integrated, interoperable and cost effective European fleets for the benefit of academic, industrial and operational marine research.

01/01/2013 to 31/12/2014

BelGOYA (BELSPO, 2013-2014)

The general objective of the BEL-GOYA project was to develop, compare and validate algorithms for atmospheric correction and suspended particulate matter (SPM) retrieval from ocean colour satellite data of extremely turbid river plumes and estuaries.
01/12/2012 to 31/05/2017

EU BON: Building the European Biodiversity Observation Network

Sustainable governance of our biological resources demands reliable scientific knowledge to be accessible and applicable to the needs of society.
