A tribute to Congolese ancestors preserved in the Institute's collections

On 24 November 2025, the Institute of Natural Sciences hosted, behind closed doors and by personal invitation, a ceremony paying tribute to Congolese individuals whose human remains are preserved in scientific collections in Belgium.
The event was organised at the initiative of the non-profit organisation Afriqhope, founded and chaired by Leaty Babin, in collaboration with the Institute. An activist committed to the restitution of African heritage and the recognition of historical injustices, Leaty Babin has been working for many years towards the repatriation of Congolese human remains and the establishment of dialogue between Belgium and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
During the afternoon, participants were welcomed by the Institute’s Director, Michel Van Camp, followed by a series of introductory speeches, a moment of reflection and the reading of a contextual note. A discussion entitled “Bokutani ya ba nkoko” (“the meeting with the ancestors”) then addressed the presence, in Belgium, of several hundred Congolese human remains, a direct legacy of the colonial period. The debate focused on remembrance work, the dignity of the persons concerned and perspectives for future collaboration.
The ceremony continued with a moment of spiritual tribute, guided by the singer Alexia Waku, including songs and traditional dances. This time of reflection aimed to honour the memory of the ancestors, in respect of Congolese cultural practices and sensitivities. The gathering ended with an informal reception in the Dinosaur Gallery, where guests were able to exchange freely on possible next steps.
By hosting this tribute, the Institute of Natural Sciences wishes to contribute to a long-term process of reflection on the management, restitution and potential repatriation of Congolese human remains preserved in its collections. This approach is part of an ongoing dialogue with the communities concerned, the competent authorities and civil society partners, in a spirit of listening, transparency and respect for human dignity.
