Earth and History of life
Wim Wouters studies archaeological fishbones from Europe, the Near east and the Atlantic. Recently, the study of subfossil and fossil fishbones from the Pliocene - Pleistocene from Belgium and the Netherlands was included in his research.
Function
A basic topic is comparative osteology. The interpretation of the fishbone assemblages lead to questions about human consumption, commercial evolution over time and social status of fishbone. More biological questions concern extinction and introduction of species, effects of pollution and change of the landscape on freshwater species and the shift between fish species over time in the fossil assemblage.
