Job description

Purpose of the position

The Institute of Natural Sciences is recruiting a scientific collaborator (F/M/X) in the context of marine conservation and marine protected areas management. The new collaborator will be engaged in the ongoing Blue4All project (https://www.blue4all.eu/), BLUECONNECT project (https://blueconnect-project.eu/) and PHAROS project(https://pharosproject.eu/). All projects are funded through the European Union’s Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters.

The research group MARECO (Marine Ecology and Management, https://mareco-odnature.naturalsciences.be/), part of the Operational Directorate Natural Environment (OD Nature) of the Institute of Natural Sciences has in-depth expertise regarding marine research in various domains.

MARECO attaches great importance to the link between research and policy support, and its members contribute to environmental impact assessment, environmental status assessment, marine spatial planning, as well as marine conservation and restoration. The group coordinates multiple monitoring programmes that assess the environmental status of the marine environment and study the environmental impact of human activities at sea. The team uses state-of-the-art research equipment, modern lab facilities and a new research vessel. MARECO provides scientific services, including access to the 'Artificial Hard Substrate Garden' and identification of marine organisms.

This vacancy is situated within the part of the team that aims to promote a sustainable management of the seas, through conservation and restoration, maritime spatial planning and responsible use of marine resources.

The position is that of a marine researcher, to take part in several European projects aiming to improve how marine protected areas are managed. The new employee will be the main contact point within MARECO to lead and participate in different tasks and work packages of two main projects: BLUECONNECT and PHAROS, with occasional participations in other projects handled by colleagues. Occasional participation in (inter)national workshops, conferences and symposia will be required.

Through the realization of the projects’ tasks, the researcher will develop their expertise in the domain or marine protected areas, marine conservation and restoration.

Outcome areas

The job is a desk-based position in RBINS’s offices in Brussels. On a daily basis, collaboration with colleagues and international partners of the different consortia is expected on tasks such as conceptualization of new approaches and methods to improve marine conservation and restoration, compiling scientific knowledge on various topics related to marine conservation, designing, leading and participating in workshops and working groups with researchers and MPA managers, testing social and ecological tools that may support marine conservation and restoration, and writing scientific reports and papers.

The focus of the new collaborator will be on

  1. The socio-ecological dimensions of marine protected areas (all projects),
  1. The definition of measures to achieve effective conservation and restoration of the marine environment (BLUECONNECT),
  1. Engagement with MPA practitioners across the Atlantic-Arctic regions (PHAROS),
  1. The review and testing of tools and methods to improve management and connectivity of marine protected areas (PHAROS),
  1. Supporting the development of the Blue4All MPA Solutions Hub to facilitate effective management of marine protected areas (Blue4All),
  1. The extension of the MPA Solutions Hub to large areas of the Atlantic, European Atlantic outermost islands and Arctic (PHAROS).
