Julien Lalanne is a collection assistant of the Paleontology Collections of the Institute. He is taking care more particularly of the fossil Invertebrates, fossil Plants and of the Micropaleontology blades and samples.
Function
Julien began to work at the Institute in 2020 as a Collection Digitizer dedicated to the Paleontology and the Insect Collections. Since 2023, he permanently joined the Paleontology collections to manage the Non-Vertebrate fossils.

- High-Resolution digitization of the Meso-Cenozoic Invertebrate Types and Figured Specimens
- Inventory and reboxing of the Coen-Aubert and Mamet Collections
Area of Expertise
Within his team and on the technical side, Julien is specialized in digitization and in 2D-3D HR images acquisition (Focus-Stacking, Structured-Light Scanning, etc.). As he manages the Non-Vertebrate part of the Fossil Collections, Julien acquired some knowledge about the Heritage aspects of these collections.
Professional Experience
Julien has a Bachelor’s in biology from the Université of Montpellier (2017) and is graduated in Biology-Ecology and Museology. He received his Master’s Degree from the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) in Paris in 2020. While he was studying, Julien has worked with other museums and labs in France and spent a year volunteering as part of the Recent Invertebrate collections of the American Museum of Natural History (New York) and the fossil ones of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (already).
