XperiBIRD.be

XperiBIRD.be is an educational project that we initiated with Google.org in 2016 for a three-year term. With the support of the Wernaers International Fund for Research and Knowledge Dissemination, the project was extended through the school year of 2019-2020.

Nest boxes equipped with a camera controlled by a nano-computer are distributed free of charge to primary and secondary schools across Belgium, allowing classes to monitor the nesting of a pair of tits. The data collected and encoded by students on the XperiBIRD.be website is displayed as an interactive map and will be analyzed by scientists from the RBINS.

This project, the first of its kind in our country, excellently combines natural sciences (the observation of tits) with technology (programming the nano-computer and encoding data). The goals are multiple: to introduce young people aged 10 to 14 to science and technology while contributing to a real scientific project.

The 600 nest boxes distributed over three years (from 2016 to 2018) will help develop an extensive network for observing and monitoring the nesting of these passerines in Belgium over the medium and long term.
